Exosomes for Skin Rejuvenation: Dr. Daniel Gould Featured in GQ

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Gould, MD, PhD was recently featured in GQ discussing exosomes, an emerging regenerative skincare technology gaining attention for its potential to support skin repair, collagen production, and overall skin quality.

Exosomes are microscopic vesicles released by cells that carry biological signals, including proteins, lipids, RNA, and other molecules involved in cellular communication. In aesthetic medicine, interest has centered on how these signaling mechanisms may influence healing, inflammation, collagen production, and skin regeneration.

While exosomes are frequently applied following treatments such as microneedling and laser resurfacing, Dr. Gould explains that creating an injury is not necessarily required for them to have a role in skincare. With an appropriately formulated product, these signaling molecules can also be applied to intact skin, expanding their potential use beyond post-procedure recovery.

Dr. Gould notes that exosomes may be particularly relevant for patients who already have the fundamentals of skincare in place and are looking to further improve skin quality. Concerns such as photoaging, declining collagen, fine lines, dryness, dullness, and other visible signs of aging may make regenerative technologies an interesting addition to an established routine.

For male patients in particular, the subtle nature of these treatments can also be appealing. Dr. Gould tells GQ that many men want visible improvement without appearing as though they have undergone a procedure. Supporting healthier-looking skin and recovery with little or no downtime can therefore align well with patients seeking a more discreet approach to aesthetic care.

At the same time, Dr. Gould emphasizes that the excitement surrounding exosomes is developing faster than the long-term clinical data. Rather than replacing established skincare practices, exosomes should be viewed as a potential addition to them. Daily sun protection, proven skincare ingredients, and treatments selected for the individual patient remain the foundation, with emerging regenerative technologies layered thoughtfully on top.
