First Reported Case of Gluteal Implant-Associated ALCL | Dr. Daniel Gould

Dr. Daniel Gould co-authored this case report published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, documenting what the authors described as the first reported case of anaplastic large cell lymphoma potentially associated with gluteal implants. 

ALCL is a rare but potentially serious form of lymphoma that had been most widely discussed in connection with breast implants, particularly textured devices. This report explored whether a similar implant-associated process could potentially occur with textured silicone implants placed elsewhere in the body.

The case involved a patient who developed an unusually aggressive presentation of ALCL following gluteal augmentation with textured implants. Imaging identified fluid accumulation and changes around the implants, raising questions about a possible relationship between the implants and the disease. 

Importantly, Dr. Gould and his co-authors emphasized that the case did not establish causation. The clinical presentation differed from the typical pattern associated with breast implant-associated ALCL, and definitive confirmation within the gluteal region was not possible. 

The report helped expand the medical discussion surrounding implant-associated lymphoma beyond breast implants, highlighting the importance of continued research, documentation, and surveillance as surgeons and researchers work to better understand rare complications associated with implantable medical devices.
