The researchers reviewed patients who underwent soft-tissue reconstruction for lower-extremity trauma at LAC-USC Medical Center between 2007 and 2015. Patients were assessed using validated measures of physical function, emotional well-being, and lower-extremity function, with an average follow-up of approximately four years.
The findings suggested that several patient and treatment factors may influence recovery following reconstruction. Older patients demonstrated poorer physical-function scores, while injury mechanism and certain reconstructive factors were also associated with differences in functional outcomes. Patients who ultimately underwent amputation following reconstruction experienced greater physical limitations.
The study highlights that successful limb salvage extends beyond preserving the extremity itself. Long-term function, quality of life, patient characteristics, and the complexity of the original injury are important considerations when evaluating reconstructive outcomes.
