Gluteal Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) | Dr. Daniel Gould

Dr. Daniel Gould co-authored this response published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal addressing an important discussion surrounding gluteal implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (GIA-ALCL), a rare condition reported in association with gluteal implants. 

The publication responds to questions raised about a previously reported case of ALCL in a patient with gluteal implants. Dr. Gould and his co-authors acknowledge that the presentation appeared unusually rapid and aggressive when compared with the patterns more commonly reported in breast implant-associated ALCL. 

The authors discuss the possibility that GIA-ALCL may behave differently from its breast implant-associated counterpart, while emphasizing that the limited number of documented cases makes definitive conclusions difficult. Less aggressive cases may also have gone unrecognized or been inadvertently treated through implant and capsule removal. 

The response also reports that another patient had subsequently presented with a late seroma that tested positive for ALCL. The authors indicated plans to further document the case following complete evaluation and treatment. 

Importantly, Dr. Gould and his colleagues proposed establishing a registry for identified cases of GIA-ALCL. This reflects the broader need for continued surveillance, documentation, and research to better understand rare implant-associated conditions and inform patient safety.
