Lymph Node Transplantation for the Treatment of Lymphedema | Dr. Daniel Gould

Dr. Daniel Gould co-authored this review published in the Journal of Surgical Oncology, examining vascularized lymph node transplantation as a physiologic surgical approach for treating lymphedema. Dr. Gould is confirmed as the lead author of the publication. 

Lymphedema is a complex condition caused by impaired lymphatic transport, leading to chronic fluid accumulation, swelling, and progressive changes within the affected tissues. Over time, patients may also develop increased fatty tissue and fibrosis, making advanced disease particularly challenging to manage.

The review focuses on vascularized lymph node transplantation, or VLNT, a microsurgical technique that transfers healthy lymph nodes together with their supporting blood supply to an area affected by lymphatic dysfunction.

Unlike procedures that primarily reduce excess tissue, VLNT is intended to address the underlying physiology of lymphedema by helping improve lymphatic clearance. The authors discuss proposed mechanisms through which transferred lymph nodes may support drainage and contribute to restoration of lymphatic function.
