Cadaveric Meniscus Arthroplasty for Wrist and Hand Joint Defects | Dr. Daniel Gould

Osteochondral defects involve damage to both the cartilage and underlying bone of a joint. In severely arthritic wrist and finger joints, traditional treatment may require joint fusion or mechanical arthroplasty, procedures that can limit motion or present concerns regarding the longevity of an artificial implant.
The researchers explored whether cadaveric meniscus tissue could instead be used to resurface damaged joints. Because meniscal tissue is naturally designed to distribute forces, absorb shock, and protect cartilage, the authors investigated its potential as a biologic material for preserving joint movement.
The study included 14 patients with defects affecting joints of the wrist, fingers, and hand. Following reconstruction with cadaveric meniscus tissue, joint space was successfully preserved across all treated joints. Patients also experienced significant reductions in pain and improvements in both flexion and extension.
The authors reported no complications directly related to the procedure during the study period. Postoperative imaging demonstrated preservation of the reconstructed joint space at an average follow-up of approximately 20 months.
The research highlights the potential of cadaveric meniscus as a biologic joint-salvage option, offering an approach designed to preserve pain-free movement while potentially delaying or avoiding complete joint fusion.
