Often described as an “internal bra,” surgical mesh may be used to provide additional support to breast tissue with the goal of maintaining shape and reducing postoperative ptosis, or sagging. However, questions remain about whether mesh provides measurable aesthetic advantages and whether its use introduces additional complications.
Dr. Gould and his co-authors conducted a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of existing research, evaluating complications including infection, hematoma, and seroma, alongside quantitative aesthetic measurements and patient-reported outcomes.
The analysis found relatively low pooled rates of infection or abscess, hematoma, and seroma. Importantly, the available evidence did not demonstrate a significant difference in overall complication risk between procedures performed with and without mesh.
While some studies suggested potentially improved maintenance of breast measurements with mesh reinforcement, the evidence was limited and did not clearly establish a significant cosmetic benefit. The authors emphasized the need for additional well-controlled research before definitive claims about improved aesthetic outcomes can be made.
The research contributes to a more evidence-based understanding of mesh-supported breast surgery, helping surgeons weigh proposed structural benefits against available data when considering its role in cosmetic breast procedures.
