Validation of Vectra 3D Imaging for Measuring Upper Extremity Lymphedema | Dr. Daniel Gould

Dr. Daniel Gould co-authored this research published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open, examining the accuracy and precision of Vectra 3D imaging for measuring upper extremity volume in patients with lymphedema. 

Upper extremity lymphedema can develop following lymph node removal during cancer treatment, resulting in persistent swelling caused by impaired lymphatic drainage. Accurately measuring changes in limb volume is essential for evaluating the condition and determining how patients respond to treatment.

Traditional assessment methods include circumference measurements using a tape and water displacement. While widely used, these techniques can have limitations, particularly when clinicians need to identify smaller or localized changes in different areas of the arm.

Dr. Gould and his co-authors evaluated 24 arms using the Vectra 3D system, measuring the hand, forearm, and upper arm and comparing the results with traditional tape and water displacement measurements. The 3D measurements demonstrated a strong correlation with both established methods. 

The study found that Vectra 3D provided precise and accurate volume measurements while offering additional advantages, including greater spatial detail and the ability to evaluate localized changes within individual regions of the upper extremity. 

The findings support three-dimensional imaging as a promising tool for objectively monitoring lymphedema, providing clinicians with a noninvasive and efficient method for tracking changes in limb volume and evaluating treatment outcomes.
